Friday and Saturday, March 2nd & 3rd, 9-5pm
This technique-packed workshop aims to expand your stone setting repertoire while building confidence by making sample settings. We've condensed this 4-part class into a 2-day intensive workshop.
The first day we will focus on bezels with corners and cover step bezels. We will discuss using pre-fabricated step bezel wire versus making your own step bezels from scratch. You will work out fabricating a step bezel setting in the workshop. We will also begin talking about the design process, specifically why and when step bezels or other types of settings are necessary or how settings can add interest to your work.
The 2nd day we will concentrate on tube settings for round faceted stones. You will learn about types of burs and how to use them with the flex shaft machine to cut a seat in tube. We will also experiment with different ways to set a stone in a tube setting. Last, but not least, we will cover flush setting. You will expand your knowledge of burs and seat-cutting and discuss choosing and altering tools for flush setting.
Experience with basic bezel setting (round and/or oval stones) as well as metalsmithing experience such as soldering is a prerequisite for this workshop. This is a sample-making class so that you have pieces to refer back to when further exploration of these techniques is done on your own.
Due at time of class: Kit Fee which includes all drill bits, setting burs, polishing burs, stones and metal for samples to be made in class. Average kit fee $75; price subject to change.
Tools are provided but we encourage you to bring eye magnification, any stone setting tools you already have, digital caliper, ruler, sharpie, center punch and notebook.
Stick around on Sunday to take advantage of our Open Studio from 12-6pm for just $10/hour to work on additional samples and continue practicing your new skill set!
