If you can use power tools, files and a torch you will find tool making easier than you think. Learn basic shaping and finishing techniques to create a set of five to six chasing tools and a decorative scribe. Explore direct heating and twisting to move steel rod, and hone in on how best to grind, sand, file and finish tool steel into desired forms. Customizing tools to fit your needs can open up a whole new world to designing the jewelry pieces you want to create!
Students develop hardening and tempering skills, the process of heating and cooling steel to obtain the final metal properties, to complete useful tools. ***Students must bring an old or previously used set of needle files, and a few 6 or 8” files (variety of shapes) that you plan to dedicate to working with ferrous metal. These can be purchased at a hardware or hobby store if you don't already own them.
This is for the advanced beginner to intermediate student. All materials & supplies are included in the class fee. Additional tool steel will be available for purchase. Wear comfortable work clothes, closed-toe shoes, and long pants. Limited seats, reserve yours today.
